Gordon Parks, ‘Voices in the Mirror’ at Jack Shainman Gallery

Press photographers from around the world wanted a picture of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini after Bergman left her family for the film director, but it was Gordon Parks who, with permission, took photographs of the lovers on the set of the 1950 film ‘Stromboli,’ shot on the island off the coast of Sicily.  After sending other press away, Bergman rewarded Parks’ discretion and skill by inviting him to stay and shoot both posed and candid photos, including this moment when three curious locals paused to gaze at the famous actress.  Just one of many iconic images Park shot for LIFE magazine, now on view at Jack Shainman Gallery, the picture speaks to the insights Parks’ images afforded LIFE readers in the realms of arts, politics and American lives. (On view through Nov 6th.)

At bottom right in this photograph, Ingrid Bergman looks down while three women turn to look at her in the distance.
