Earlier this year, 20-something Brooklyn artist Asher Liftin showed a grid of drawings and an identical grid of prints on opposite walls of Nino Meir Gallery, daring visitors to identify which was which. Though there’s no guessing game in his current show just seven months later at 125 Newbury, Liftin’s technique is still a draw. Gallery owner Arne Glimcher explains in a text accompanying the show that for him, Liftin’s large-scale acrylic and paint canvases recalled tapestries and photos, even though he knew they were hand painted. Liftin, who has a BS in Cognitive Science as well as a BA in Visual Art, tricks the eye by hand painting cyan, magenta, yellow and black dots in rows, mimicking the way printers work, but with occasional paint drips that attest to their being handmade. (On view in Tribeca through Oct 31st).
