Arlene Shechet’s abstract sculptures prove that ideas can’t always be put into words. Sometimes resembling soft bodies or angular architecture but usually defying description, their slippery identities, alluring colors and varied surfaces encourage pondering, as do the artist’s three new monumental sculptures at Pace Gallery. Standing at 16, 11 and 10 feet high, ‘Eve,’ ‘Flo’ and ‘Jewel’ demand to be taken seriously, despite their curving forms and soothing green or rust tones. Coming on the heels of Shechet’s ‘Girl Group’ exhibition of similarly sized sculpture in 2024 at Storm King Art Center, the new work rejects the high seriousness of 20th century modern abstraction in favor of complexity and humor. (On view in Chelsea through Oct 24th).
