Tony Cragg, ‘Eclipse’ and ‘Masks’ at Marian Goodman Gallery

Three large, thin oblongs in British sculptor Tony Cragg’s show of new work at Marian Goodman Gallery titled ‘Masks’ lack any strong suggestion of human faces though they appear to be composed of layers that may open to reveal something hidden.  Here, a ‘mask’ in gorgeous Guatemalan green stone stands beyond Cragg’s stack of undulating carved wood that from a certain angle materializes as a face.  Nearby, forms resembling fertility figures and bird and animal-like totems push recognizable shapes in the natural world to new and strange dimensions.  (On view in Tribeca through Oct 24th).

A green stone sculpture is in the background of a white cube gallery and an abstract green sculpture is in the foreground right that appears to be a face.
