Lynda Benglis’ nature-inspired forms, crafted in a variety of materials from bronze to chicken wire, perch on floor and walls in Pace Gallery’s handsome retrospective of work from the early 70s to 2024. Titled, ‘Knotting, Tying, Folding,’ the show features dynamic, looping shapes with evocative titles like ‘Striking Cobra,’ a thick curve of metal with a projecting end, or ‘Sparkle Devil,’ a pink and purple cornucopia decorated with cast glitter. Here, ‘Yellow Tail’ makes one of many references to fish in the show – growing up in Louisiana, Benglis had her own boat – but the artist has also cited her grandmother’s crocheting as inspiration for the exhibition’s weighty bronze sculptures that monumentalize the minute forms necessary to create a textile.
