Titled ‘Cathedrals,’ this black slate sculpture by Spanish artist Manolo Paz echoes the vertical forms of midtown Manhattan on the Park Ave Malls and brings to mind an early 20th century nickname for the 1913 Woolworth Building – the ‘Cathedral of Commerce.’ Created not in glass and steel but in natural forms, however, Paz’s trio of layered monoliths recalls stacked stone cairns with spiritual or memorial purpose. Isolated between the busy lanes of traffic on Park Avenue like an oasis of calm, the piece offers pedestrians a moment of respite before plunging back into the city grid.
