Genesis Belanger, ‘Heads or Tails’ at City Hall Park

Known for her stylized and surreal sculptures of bodies and food items presented in pleasingly soft colors, Genesis Belanger steps into new territory with her Public Art Fund presentation in City Hall Park of bronze versions of the nearby statue of Lady Justice atop City Hall.  Removed from her pedestal and mimicking the scales of justice rather than holding them, visitors encounter Justice at our own scale and in our territory.  Idiosyncratic and maybe even silly, her pose erodes her credibility while her disjointed body conveys an ad hoc state of being.  Here, she is one of us and less of an abstracted ideal, a notion that is at once welcoming and disconcerting.  (On view downtown in City Hall Park through Nov 15th).
