Featured alongside Instagram posts about his feats in triathlons and Ironman competitions, New York artist Ryan Wallace’s ostensibly abstract multi-media works on canvas suggest moving, energetic forces. In person at Susan Inglett Gallery, the artworks similarly undergo a transformation as viewers become aware of their material richness. Made of enamel, acrylic, ink, copper, aluminum, fiberglass, canvas and linen, the layered 2D works appear simultaneously loose and precise while the humble, matte quality of ink-dyed cloth is belied by warm light reflecting off a copper underlayer. (On view in Chelsea through Sept 4th).
