Though born and raised on a remote island at the far north of the Philippine archipelago, Pacita Abad visited over sixty countries in her lifetime, absorbing craft traditions from SE Asia, Africa and the Caribbean and developing a global art practice. In 1998, Abad visited Yemen and was struck by the painted doorways and stained-glass windows of the nation’s capital and villages. Back in her studio in Jakarta, Abad created the painted and stitched works now on view at Tina Kim Gallery that not only pay homage to the geometry and color of Yemeni design but here, are painted on woven straw mats like those made by Yemeni women. (On view through June 20th).
