Gregor Hildebrandt at Galerie Perrotin

What do you do as a tune-loving artist with no talent for making music?  German artist Gregor Hildebrandt’s answer has been to make art with music-related objects, creating walls with records pressed into clam-shell shapes and ‘paintings’ with cassette tape replacing brush strokes or lines.  In the background of this installation view, VHS tape stretched against the wall creates a fluttering surface, as ephemeral as a musical note.  (On view on the Lower East Side at Galerie Perrotin through Dec 22nd).

Derrick Velasquez in ‘No Lemon, No Melon’ at Flowers Gallery

With their staggered placement, Derrick Velasquez’s hand-cut strips of marine vinyl, draped over a wooden support, have shaggy ends recalling hair or fur. From close or afar, they’re pleasingly ordered but the visceral colors and bright yellow accents really bring the piece to life. (At Flowers Gallery in Chelsea through Sept 2nd).

Louise Lawler at Metro Pictures

Iconic appropriation artist Louise Lawler appropriates her own appropriations in her latest show at Chelsea’s Metro Pictures gallery with this black and white tracing of an earlier work, printed on vinyl and hung on an entire gallery wall. Drained of color and magnified, the Pollock above and tureen below seem less dissimilar. (Through July 25th).

Haim Steinbach in ‘Between the Lines,’ at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery

Known for his careful arrangements of consumer objects on shelves, New York artist Haim Steinbach samples readymades of a different kind in this text piece.  Though the size of the greeting suggests it’s being offered at high volume, its punctuation implies a curtness lacking warmth.  (At Chelsea’s Tanya Bonakdar Gallery through Feb 8th).
