Sarah Peters takes her stylized bronze head sculptures to a newly disquieting level in her current exhibition at Van Doren Waxter on the Lower East Side. Riffing on Greek dramatic masks, ancient Assyrian or Akkadian heads, and sex dolls, figures heads like this one embody ziggurat-like architectural form, as if place and priestess had merged into one haunting figure. Saying her art practice is about ‘mistranslating the history of ancient objects,’ Brooklyn-based sculptor Sarah Peters ‘misinterprets’ Akkadian rulers, Greek busts and more with stunning results in several bronze heads at LES gallery Eleven Rivington. (Through May 17th).

New York artists Mira Dancy and Sarah Peters compliment each other’s interest in picturing female bodies in a joint show at Asya Geisberg Gallery that pairs Dancy’s energetic expressionist painting with Peter’s pleasingly strange mannerist sculptures. Here, an erotically posed nude in shades of pink, peach and a vivid yellow contrast a composed character exuding thoughtful calm. (In Chelsea through Nov 26th).
