James Welling in David Zwirner Gallery’s On-Line Viewing Room

Titled ‘Pathological Color,’ James Welling’s on-line exhibition of photography at David Zwirner Gallery assaults the senses with intense color contrasts generated by the artist’s experimental practice in Photoshop.  This detail of a photo by Welling from New York Art Tours’ archives features images of dancers layered with modernist buildings and landscapes, each suggesting performance on a different kind of stage.   Aiming to explore our perception of color, Welling draws on ‘pathologies’ described by Goethe, who considered the impact of particular colors on the senses.  For more images, including early examples of his technique, visit David Zwirner Gallery’s on-line Viewing Room.

Florian Maier-Aichen at 303 Gallery

For years, Florian Maier-Aichen stayed dedicated to analogue approaches to photography; his latest digital images – created with Photoshop’s Lasso tool – have the joyful energy of a new convert. (On view at 303 Gallery in Chelsea through Dec 22nd).

James Welling at David Zwirner Gallery




Influential LA photographer James Welling merges photos of dancers, modernist architecture and landscapes in one of his most beautiful series to date. ‘Choreograph,’ currently on view at David Zwirner Gallery, derives its brilliant colors from intense Photoshop experimentation and its dynamism from the ghost-like images interacting on Welling’s unique stage. Eric Cahan at Benrubi Gallery

Starting with a solarized photo of water in which the dark tones have turned light, Brooklyn artist Eric Cahan scans and prints each image, attacking it with bleach and altering it in Photoshop. In a time when web users spend just seconds looking at images, Cahan’s practice questions what abstract art should offer the viewer. (At Benrubi Gallery through Aug 22nd).

Penelope Umbrico at LMAK Projects

During a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, Penelope Umbrico photographed cameras from the museum’s collection and printed them, applying Photoshop’s ‘Old Style’ filter, and creating this rather forelorn selection of specimens which rest under a projection of a mountain (used as a subject by Ansel Adams) photographed using hundreds of filters available on dozens of smartphone apps.  (At LMAK Projects on the Lower East Side through Oct 20th).
