Leo Villareal at Pace Gallery

Can you capture the feeling of a sunset and make it last?  New media artist Leo Villareal has explained that his latest ‘digital sculptures’ – LED lights and electronics behind acrylic panels – at Chelsea’s Pace Gallery, have a similar effect to watching natural phenomena.  Titled ‘Interstellar’ and inspired by images from space, including photos from the James Webb Telescope, the new wall-mounted works manifest in a range of palettes, from calming blue/greens to blazing yellow/orange tones.  Powered by custom coding, the imagery constantly morphs, enticing viewers to linger.  (On view through April 29th).

Daniel Canogar at Bitforms Gallery

Off-the-wall artwork isn’t unusual on the Lower East Side, but artist Daniel Canogar’s flexible LED screen-sculptures give new meaning to the phrase. In a solo show at Bitforms Gallery, Canogar employs grids of LEDS on flexible backing to display undulating patterns, derived from real-time environmental data, from temperature to seismic activity. (On the Lower East Side through Oct 14th).

Daniel Canogar in ‘Summer 2017’ at Bitforms

Real time seismic activity interrupts the shifting abstract patterns on Daniel Canogar’s curving panels, merging art and distant, powerful forces. Peeling off the wall on flexible LED tiles arranged on an armature, ‘Echo’ strains for our attention and gets it. (At Bitforms on the Lower East Side through July 30th).

Christian Marclay at Paula Cooper Gallery

Christian Marclay’s 24-hour video of collaged clock-related film clips from 2010 was so engaging that his subsequent photo projects and onomatopoeia paintings have sometimes seemed bland by comparison. The standout piece in his latest solo show at Chelsea’s Paula Cooper Gallery corrects that trend, however, by animating words from cartoons in an eye-popping immersive installation that, though soundless, communicates loudly. Mariah Dekkenga in ‘Post-Analogue Painting’ at The Hole NYC

Mariah Dekkenga’s vibrantly colored untitled abstraction is a standout in The Hole’s ‘post-analogue’ painting group show on the LES. Developed in Adobe Illustrator and transferred to canvas by hand, Dekkenga’s paintings feature obviously hand-applied thick paint as well as blurs and gradients that suggest the digital. (Through May 24th).
