Serena Stevens at Postmasters Gallery

Now back in her native Iowa to complete an MFA, young painter Serena Stevens conveys contemplative quiet in new, large-scale paintings of domestic environments at Postmasters Gallery.  Cats abound, here, pictured in the panels of a cozy-looking quilt and as stuffed toys.  A pair of cast-off jeans on the bed suggest a quick change rather than an erotic interlude in a painting that explores the psychology of intimate spaces.  (On view in Tribeca through Sept 13th.  Appointments are not necessary, but masks and social distancing are required.)

Charles Ritchie at BravinLee Programs

Charles Ritchie’s tiny, meticulous watercolor and graphite drawings include reflections in the windows of his suburban home, offering a scene of the outdoors that’s at the same time, a view of his workplace.   The merged locations feel dream-like and explore connectedness between interior and exterior realms. (At BravinLee Programs in Chelsea through Oct 14th).

Bennett Vadnais in ‘Cityscapes’ at George Billis Gallery

New York painter Bennett Vadnais’ ‘House’ is a standout in George Billis Gallery’s summer group exhibition of cityscapes. Several of the show’s paintings zero in details of urban life – a water tower, a segment of a bridge – but Vadnais adds a focus on the passage of time by contrasting buildings from different eras.  (On view in Chelsea through July 22nd ).

Beverly Buchanan at Andrew Edlin Gallery

Amid monochromatic structures that recall real world shacks built with available resources, Beverly Buchanan also created a boldly colored house built as a studio and a home. This spirited building perfectly embodies Buchanan’s aim to make buildings that are survivors but communicate, in her words, ‘Here I am; I’m still here!’ (At Andrew Edlin Gallery on the Lower East Side through April 15th).

RongRong and inri at Chambers Fine Art

To make work for the 2012 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, photographers RongRong and inri packed up their family and moved from Beijing to rural Japan, creating timeless, ethereal black and white scenes shot in a 200-year-old house. (At Chambers Fine Art in Chelsea through Aug 20th).
