Sugiura Yasuyoshi in ‘The Slipstream: Reflection, Resilience and Resistance in the Art of Our Time’ at the Brooklyn Museum of Art

Dogwood flowers are known for their ‘delicate yet tough appearance’ the Brooklyn Museum explains; Sugiura Yasuyoshi’s sculptural version of a dogwood bloom adds another contrast by presenting transient beauty in solid stoneware.  Known for his ceramic sculptures of flowers, Yasuyoshi’s blooms may seem an unusual choice for ‘The Slipstream,’ the museum’s current show of work from the permanent collection that reflects on the turbulence of 2020.  But the flower is often associated with rebirth, making it a symbol of hope.  (On view through March 20, ’22.  Masks and vaccination proof required.)

Jeanette Mundt in ‘The Rest’ at Lisson Gallery

Jeanette Mundt’s vivid red poppies look anything but innocent in this painting, testifying to the power of the plant as a drug.  Painted from an on-line source, inspired by Van Gogh’s poppies and including a hidden image of a reclining woman, this rich and seductive image speaks to the possibility of multiple sources to reconfigure as a meaningful image.  (On view in ‘The Rest’ at Lisson Gallery through Feb 16th).

Johannes VanDerBeek at Marinaro

Johannes VanDerBeek’s thick aqua-resin paintings at new Lower East Side gallery Marinaro look like highly colored views from under the microscope. Looser than Joan Miro and freer and more abstract than Yves Tanguy, the work still channels Surrealism and early 20th century abstraction. (On view through March 19th).

Sally Gall at Julie Saul Gallery

Sally Gall’s gorgeous, boldly colored photos bring to mind flowers, sea creatures and fungi; in fact, the billowing organic shapes are laundry items, photographed from under a drying line. The show wonderfully affirms the beauty in the everyday. (At Julie Saul Gallery through Oct 22nd)

Sopheap Pich at Tyler Rollins Fine Art

Cambodia-based artist Sopheap Pich’s bamboo and rattan sculptures are inspired by the natural world, yet bring to mind 3-D diagrams in virtual space. Here, Pich presents a flowering stem for admiration, not for its color but for its curving forms searching for light. (At Tyler Rollins Fine Art in Chelsea through Nov 19th).
