Pleione, the nymph in Greek mythology who protected sailors, shares a name with this 2016 canvas by Ron Gorchov. Painted on the artist’s signature saddle-stretchers to suggest ancient Greek shields, the colors of each panel range from fleshy to fiery as they reach skyward. (At Cheim & Read through August 25th).
As surreal as ever, Leipzig-based painter Neo Rauch’s latest canvases intrigue with their somnambulant cast of characters and dream-like scenarios. In ‘Guardians of the Night,’ pictured here, a crab-clawed woman who approaches a sleeping man seems more like a healer more than a menace; meanwhile, a drummer and a custodian linger near. Colorful grid patterns on canvas as ad hoc busy as a community noticeboard dot the walls of Franklin Evans’ eye-catching show at Chelsea’s Ameringer McEnery Yohe. But it’s the total overall effect of floors, ceilings and walls covered in vibrant colors, art historical references and wall texts that impresses in this ambitious exhibition. (Through August 1st).

At eleven by eleven feet, New York painter Pat Steir’s monumental pours of pigment, oil and turpentine create glowing sheets of color in deep spaces that beckon and offer to engulf the viewer. (At Chelsea’s Cheim and Read Gallery through March 29th).
