Tom Fruin at Mike Weiss Gallery

Brooklyn-based artist Tom Fruin recalls Lady Liberty’s flame and the colorful city grid in new sculpture at Chelsea’s Mike Weiss Gallery – both to be appreciated from the seat of a custom-designed swing. (Through October 18th).

Suzanne Opton at Sikkema Jenkins & Co.

New York photographer Suzanne Opton creates a surprisingly intimate situation between gallery visitors and her subjects – soldiers who are back in the US after a tour of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. Reclining on a flat surface, their presence and vulnerability is palpable. (At Sikkema Jenkins & Co in Chelsea through July 18th).

Jonas Woods on the High Line

New residential buildings are springing up on 10th Ave like weeds, making this billboard-sized domestic scene by LA artist Jonas Woods strangely appropriate.  The personality of each plant is enhanced by quirky pots – most of which resemble creations by Wood’s wife, ceramic artist Shio Kusaka.  (On the High Line at 18th Street through Feb 3rd.)
