Sarah Sense, ‘Land, Line, Blood, Memory’ at Bruce Silverstein Gallery

Sarah Sense’s dynamic sculptural photographs at Bruce Silverstein Gallery weave her images of national park landscapes into European maps of North America and historical documents related to ongoing European and Native American encounter, questioning ownership of and connection to the land.  Continuing her Chitimacha and Choctaw family’s traditions of basketry, Sense incorporates patterns that reference the natural and spiritual world while adding quilt fabric collected by her grandmother of European descent into the ‘Tree Weaving Quilt pictured here.  Created with her own children, Sense describes this textile as both comforting and decorative, ‘an act of love’ shared with her family.  (On view in Chelsea through Nov 21st).

A hanging textile, woven through with ribbons that extend onto the gallery wall behind and are flanked by framed photos.
