‘Daniel Buren, Barbara Kasten’ at Bortolami Gallery

Barbara Kasten’s photographs challenge viewers to understand the interrelation of forms in colorful, geometric assemblages that she shoots at close range, while French conceptual artist Daniel Buren often deploys his signature stripe pattern in real space to make viewers aware of their environment in new ways.  Together, their combined show of work at 55 Walker of photos from the ‘80s (Kasten) and aluminum and mirror constructions from 2019 – 2022 (Buren) present artworks that initially seem spatially straightforward yet ultimately entice visitors to linger over the complexity of a constructed image or interaction with the real space of the gallery. (On view in Tribeca through Oct 24th).

An abstract sculpture composed of three pink, green and striped triangles on a mirrored background.
